Local Government

The councils of Brisbane City, Logan City, Beaudesert Shire and Ipswich City are all committed to working towards the ecological sustainability of the Oxley Creek catchment. The councils are directly involved as members of the Oxley Creek Catchment Association Inc. They also conduct many activities that influence catchment management. For example, local governments regularly review their land planning actions. Brisbane City Council has updated the City Plan which influences land use decisions in Oxley Creek catchment. Logan City Council conducts environmental education programs for its residents. Beaudesert Shire Council has introduced tree clearing regulations. Brisbane City Council employs Erosion and Sediment Control officers.

Oxley Creek Bushland Care Groups

Habitat Brisbane is Brisbane City Council's Bushland Care Program. Logan City Council also conducts a Bushland Care Program. For more information contact the council offices.

The main goals of the Oxley Creek Bushland Care Groups are revegetation and habitat creation. Thirteen groups operate in the catchment in the suburbs of Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville, Yeronga, Moorooka, Sunnybank, Nathan, Forestdale and Salisbury. With the assistance of Greening Australia Qld, Work for the Dole, Green Corps, and Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers, the groups remove weeds and replant sites with native plants indigenous to the area. Planting of native species provides better habitat and food for wildlife. All revegetation projects on local government controlled land work to an agreed plan which considers local residents along with the local environment. The Oxley Creek flood study identifies locations along the creek that could support more vegetation without adversely affecting flood levels.

Oxley Creek Waterwatch Network

PO Box 217
Sherwood 4075
Ph. 3278 2899
Fax. 3278 4435

This program increases understanding of waterways, the impacts on them, and ways to improve their condition. Schools are an important part of the program. Waterwatchers regularly monitor their local waterways to get a feel for what is "normal" for that waterway. Simple biological, physical and chemical tests have been developed for Waterwatchers. The Network maintains a database of monitoring results. When the Waterwatch Network identifies potential problems, it works with authorities to develop strategies to help improve water quality. By alerting relevant authorities, increasing public awareness or organising a clean up day, Waterwatchers contribute to the long-term health of their catchment. The Oxley Creek Waterwatch Network involves schools and community groups around the catchment in water quality monitoring.
